Common questions about this tool

Newborn Upfront Payment is a A$667 lump sum paid soon after your baby is born. Newborn Supplement is an extra fortnightly amount paid alongside your FTB Part A for 13 weeks. First child supplement totals A$1,948.13 (A$149.86 per fortnight). Subsequent children A$651.05 (A$50.08 per fortnight). You get both payments if eligible (they are not alternatives). Both require FTB Part A eligibility. Both are tax-free, not repayable.
Almost always PPL if you qualify. PPL pays around A$21,979 over 24 weeks (2025-26 rate). Newborn payments total A$2,615 for first child or A$1,318 for subsequent (over 13 weeks). PPL is roughly 8-10x more valuable. The Newborn payments option exists for parents who do not meet PPL work test (10 of 13 months work, 330 hours), or whose income exceeds PPL thresholds. If you do not qualify for PPL, the Newborn payments are a fallback.
Both payments multiply for multiple births. Twins get 2x Upfront Payment (A$1,334) and 2x Supplement (A$3,896.26 if both are first children). Triplets get 3x of each. This is because each baby has their own equipment, clothing, and feeding needs. For multiple births, the Higher CCS automatically applies if you have multiple kids under 5 in care, and FTB Part A pays per child. The total support for twins or higher-order multiples can be substantial.
The Newborn Supplement is paid fortnightly for 13 weeks, on the same payment dates as your FTB Part A. It is automatically calculated by Services Australia once you tell them about the baby and they confirm FTB Part A eligibility. The Upfront Payment of A$667 is a one-off, usually paid within 1-2 weeks of your application. Apply through myGov as soon as you have your baby's birth certificate or hospital birth record.
Yes. The Newborn Upfront Payment and Newborn Supplement are also available for adopted children, children in long-term foster care, and children for whom you become the carer (e.g., grandparent care, kinship care). The child must have been in your care for less than 12 months. You must apply within 52 weeks of the child coming into your care.
The Stillborn Baby Payment is a separate one-off payment of A$3,930 (2025-26). It is available regardless of your income or FTB eligibility. It recognises the financial costs already incurred for a baby that did not live. Apply through Services Australia within 52 weeks of the stillbirth. Bereavement and counselling services are also available through Red Nose and SANDS (Australia).
Yes. The Newborn payments are not automatic with FTB Part A. You need to add them when you claim or update your FTB application. Through myGov / Centrelink: log in, go to your Centrelink homepage, click 'Add a child' or 'Update payment options'. Add the baby's details, birth date, and indicate you are claiming Newborn payments (not PPL). Services Australia confirms and processes within 2-4 weeks usually.
