Common questions about this tool

PPL is paid at the national minimum wage rate, currently A$915.80 per week (gross before tax). The total payment depends on how many weeks you take. For babies born July 2024-June 2025, PPL is 22 weeks (A$20,148 total). For July 2025-June 2026, it increases to 24 weeks (A$21,979). From July 2026, it reaches 26 weeks (A$23,811). This is a major increase from the original 18 weeks. PPL is in addition to any employer-paid parental leave you might receive.
Yes. Self-employed parents qualify for PPL the same way as employed parents. You must have worked 10 of the 13 months before birth (paid or self-employed) and worked at least 330 hours in your 10-month qualifying period. Your individual income must be under A$176,029. Self-employment counts as work for the work test. Apply through myGov/Centrelink. Income is assessed from your most recent tax return.
You cannot have both. PPL is usually more valuable. PPL pays A$915.80/week for 22-26 weeks. Newborn Upfront Payment + Supplement is A$667 upfront plus up to A$1,948 over 13 weeks (total A$2,615 for first child). For most working parents, PPL is 8-10x more valuable than the Newborn Supplement. The Newborn Supplement is better only if you do not qualify for PPL (did not meet work test, very low income, or income above PPL limits).
From 1 July 2025, yes. The Australian government pays the 12% superannuation guarantee contribution on PPL payments. This is a significant change. Previously, PPL was the only paid leave type where super was not paid, which disadvantaged women's retirement savings. The super contribution is paid into your nominated super fund. Make sure your super fund details are up to date with Services Australia when you apply for PPL.
From 1 July 2024, 2 weeks of PPL are reserved for each parent (cannot be transferred). If only one parent takes PPL, the family loses those 2 reserved weeks. This is the use-it-or-lose-it concept seen in many European countries. For 2025-26 (24 weeks total), 2 weeks are reserved for each parent. For single-parent families, the reserved weeks merge so the single parent gets the full 24 weeks. Same-sex couples are eligible the same as different-sex couples.
Yes. PPL was changed from a single block of 18 weeks to a flexible payment that you can take in two periods. You must take the first 12 weeks within 12 months of birth/adoption. The remaining weeks (up to 14) can be taken within 24 months of birth. This allows for return-to-work, then taking more leave later. Useful for transitioning back gradually or for sharing care with a partner. The flexibility was introduced in July 2023.
PPL counts as taxable income for the year. It will be included in your assessable income when Services Australia calculates your FTB Part A and Part B at the end of the financial year. For most families, the boost in income from PPL is offset by the temporary reduction in regular wages while on leave. The net effect is usually neutral or slightly positive for FTB.
