Who is eligible for PMMVY?
PMMVY (Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana) is open to all pregnant women and lactating mothers from January 2017 onwards, except those who are regular government employees of central or state government. Mother must be at least 19 years old at conception. The benefit is for the first living child of the family. PMMVY 2.0 (launched 2022) extended ₹6,000 to second child if the child is a girl. PMMVY does not apply to third or later children except in special exempt categories.
When are PMMVY installments paid?
For the first child, PMMVY ₹6,000 is paid in three installments. First installment ₹3,000 within 30 days of registration at Anganwadi (must register within 150 days of last menstrual period). Second installment ₹2,000 after at least one antenatal check-up at government health facility (around 6 months pregnancy). Third installment ₹1,000 after birth registration and the baby's first immunization (BCG, OPV-0, Hep B-0). For girl child (second born), the entire ₹6,000 is paid as single lump sum after birth + first immunization.
Are there any fees for PMMVY application?
No. PMMVY is completely free. No application fee. No processing fee. No payment to any official, Anganwadi worker, ASHA, or middleman. If anyone asks for money to help you with PMMVY application, that is fraud. Report to district collector or call PMMVY helpline 011-23381092. ASHA workers and Anganwadi sevikas are paid by the government to help you apply, free of charge to you.
Which bank account receives PMMVY money?
PMMVY money is sent only to bank accounts in the mother's name that are linked with her Aadhaar number through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). Joint accounts and husband's accounts do not work. If you don't have a bank account, open a Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) account free at any nationalized bank or post office. Required: Aadhaar card. The PMJDY account also gives you ₹10,000 overdraft facility, ₹1 lakh accident insurance, and ₹30,000 life insurance, all free.
What is the MCP card?
MCP card stands for Mother and Child Protection card It is the most important document during pregnancy in India. Free from any Anganwadi, primary health centre, or government hospital. It records all your ANC check-ups, weight, blood pressure, blood test results, ultrasound findings, baby's vaccinations after birth, growth measurements. PMMVY requires the MCP card. Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) also requires it. Carry it to every check-up and to delivery. Keep it safe for at least 6 years.
Can working women claim PMMVY?
Yes if you are not a regular government employee. Private sector employees, self-employed, contract workers, daily wage workers, and farm workers all qualify for PMMVY. If you work in central or state government as a regular employee (with maternity benefits under Maternity Benefit Act 1961), you cannot claim PMMVY because you already get full pay during maternity leave. Contract government workers and those without formal maternity benefits CAN claim PMMVY. Many private sector employees get only 6-12 weeks paid leave, which is less than PMMVY plus state schemes combined.
Can I get PMMVY without Anganwadi registration?
No. Registration at your local Anganwadi or government health facility is mandatory. The Anganwadi worker or ASHA fills the PMMVY form (Form 1A), helps you with documents, and submits to the system. There is no online direct application by mothers. The reason is that the Anganwadi network ensures rural and tribal women can access PMMVY easily without internet. Find your nearest Anganwadi by calling 1098 (CHILDLINE) or 102 (free maternal health ambulance). They will guide you.
